Fleet and Cargo Truck Insurance: what your policy must include

Must-have coverages, riders that change the price, and the securement policy for trucks and tractor-trailers in Mexico.

Fleet of white trucks and vans in a logistics yard

In Mexico, according to AMIS, only about a third of the vehicle fleet is insured, and the fleet segment concentrates the most expensive claims in auto insurance. For a company, every vehicle grounded by a crash, theft or a third-party dispute isn't an incident: it's lost sales days and a premium that climbs at renewal.

Must-have coverages per vehicle

  • Third-party liability (people and property) with a generous limit: the law mandates a minimum, but a serious accident can quickly reach several million pesos.
  • Material damage (partial and total loss) and total theft, with negotiated deductibles by vehicle type.
  • Passenger medical expenses and driver personal accident.
  • 24/7 roadside assistance appropriate to the vehicle (car, pickup, truck, tractor-trailer, bus).

Riders that change the price without you noticing

This is where many companies overpay or fall short. These riders decide whether your policy actually fits your operation:

  • Cargo type: A (non-hazardous), B (hazardous), C (highly hazardous). Misdeclaring it is the #1 cause of claim denials.
  • Declared use: courier, school, cargo, public transport, private chauffeur, security. If your unit runs differently than declared, the policy won't respond.
  • Zero deductible on total theft with a satellite tracker installed.
  • Damage caused by the cargo, and loading/unloading operations.
  • Environmental Liability (essential for units carrying fuels or chemicals).

High-risk policy (securement policy)

For trucks valued above MXN 200,000 and all tractor-trailers, insurers typically set a 30% deductible on total theft, reducible to 0% if you install satellite tracking, operate between 6am and 10pm, and report the event within the first hour. On trailers valued above 200,000 the base deductible is 20%. Following the policy isn't optional — it's the difference between a paid claim and a rejected one.

Prevention: the only real way to lower the premium

Quoting over and over doesn't lower premiums. Two things do: fewer claims and a certified operating profile. The Cuida tu Flotilla program works on claims history, SWOT analysis, an objective 1,000-point diagnostic, and lands a plan with defensive driving, instructor training and risk analysis. In parallel, ADAS systems (autonomous braking, lane change, blind-spot alerts) reduce events, and insurers already price that in.

Renewal checklist

  • Do declared uses and cargo types still match reality?
  • Are NOM-068 inspections and NOM-087 driver rest logs up to date?
  • Do you have training records (≥ 40 hours/year per operator)?
  • Are satellite trackers active and audited?
  • Are there cameras/ADAS on the higher-exposure vehicles?

FAQ about fleet insurance

How many vehicles count as a fleet?

At GNP and most insurers in Mexico, a fleet policy is issued from 5 vehicles. Below that, they're written as individual policies grouped administratively. The advantage of a fleet is a unified rate, negotiated deductibles and one renewal date.

Does cargo truck insurance cover the goods being transported?

The vehicle policy (car/truck) does NOT cover the cargo. To protect the goods you buy a Cargo Transport policy (domestic or international) — a separate policy. Many fleets fail here: they insure the trucks and leave the cargo unprotected, with heavy exposure to a loss.

How do you lower a fleet insurance premium?

Three real levers: reduce claims (driver training, ADAS, telemetry), certify the operation with standards like Cuida tu Flotilla, and adjust deductibles to the real operation. Quoting several insurers in parallel gives you leverage; asking for discounts without evidence of operational improvement doesn't.

What to do now

Request a claims review for the last three years. That single data set, with a per-vehicle analysis, usually reveals two or three concrete decisions (device, training, deductible change) that move the premium far more than chasing 'the cheapest insurer'.

The next step

If your company operates 5 or more vehicles, a diagnostic and proposal exercise with the Cuida tu Flotilla program can reduce loss rates and premium. Reach a Donner & Asociados advisor via donnerseguros.com.
