GNP network hospitals in Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit: the guide you need before buying medical insurance
Which hospitals are in-network with GNP in Puerto Vallarta and Bahía de Banderas — and how to make sure your policy covers both sides of the bay.

Living by the ocean has some privilege to it and some responsibility. Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit (especially Bahía de Banderas) have become one of Mexico's favorite destinations to vacation, retire, or move to for remote work. But when it comes to your health, the key question isn't how many hospitals are in the bay — it's which ones are in your insurer's network. That's where many get an unpleasant surprise during an emergency.
In this guide we explain, with data updated to July 2026, which hospitals are in-network with GNP in the area, why location matters so much in this bay split between two states, and how to check your plan actually covers the hospital you'd go to. If you're new to these concepts, start with our guide to what Major Medical insurance covers.
One bay, two states: why that changes your coverage
Bahía de Banderas is one bay geographically, but administratively it's split: the south half is Jalisco (Puerto Vallarta) and the north half is Nayarit (Bahía de Banderas municipality — Nuevo Nayarit/Nuevo Vallarta, Bucerías, La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, Punta de Mita). Practical consequence: when you search GNP's directory, filter by state AND municipality, not just "Vallarta". Search only Jalisco and you'll miss the Nayarit options, and vice versa.
GNP in-network hospitals in Puerto Vallarta (Jalisco)
According to GNP's official medical-provider directory consulted in July 2026, in Puerto Vallarta the following hospitals are in-network:
- Hospital Joya Marina — Francisco Medina Ascencio 2760, Zona Hotelera. Flexible Indigo tier, hospital level B.
- Hospiten Vallarta — Francisco Medina Ascencio 3970, Villa Las Flores. Flexible Indigo tier, hospital level B.
- Hospital MEDASIST — Manuel M. Diéguez 360, Emiliano Zapata, C.P. 48380. Flexible Ambar tier, hospital level B.
- Hospital CMQ Centro — Basilio Badillo 365, Emiliano Zapata, C.P. 48380. Flexible Ambar tier, hospital level C.
Two of them (Joya Marina and Hospiten) sit along Francisco Medina Ascencio, the avenue linking the Hotel Zone with the airport, and the other two are in Emiliano Zapata, the heart of downtown. In an emergency, having options at both ends of the city is a real advantage.
GNP in-network hospitals in Riviera Nayarit (Bahía de Banderas)
On the Nayarit side, the directory shows in-network:
- Hospital Joya Riviera Nayarit — Paseo de los Cocoteros 55, Fracc. Náutico Turístico (Nuevo Nayarit/Nuevo Vallarta), Bahía de Banderas municipality.
It's the reference hospital for anyone living or staying in Nuevo Nayarit, Flamingos, Bucerías or La Cruz. It shares group with Hospital Joya Marina in Vallarta, which gives continuity if you need to move between the two sides of the bay.
Important: hospital networks change over time. Hospitals can enter or leave the network and tiers get updated. This list is a July 2026 snapshot; before a scheduled appointment or surgery, always confirm through GNP's official directory (gnp.com.mx) or with your advisor.
The advantages of being properly insured in this area
Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit offer something uncommon: solid private medical infrastructure at a tourist destination. Hospitals like Joya, Hospiten or CMQ are used to seeing both Mexican residents and foreigners and tourists, staff often speaks English, and they have experience with water-sport accidents, dehydration and travel incidents. For those who live here full-time — increasingly families and retirees — that means not having to fly to Guadalajara or Mexico City for quality care.
The trade-off is cost. Hospital care for appendicitis, a motorcycle crash or an emergency surgery can run hundreds of thousands of pesos without insurance. A well-chosen Major Medical policy turns that shock into a manageable deductible and coinsurance. You can review product details on our individual Major Medical page.
How to check which hospitals your "tier" actually covers
Here's the part almost nobody explains. At GNP, your medical plan defines a hospital access — which hospitals your policy lets you into. GNP Personaliza lets you choose between two modalities:
- Essential access: a defined list of hospitals (lower premium).
- Full access: every hospital in-network with GNP in your city of purchase.
Plus, each hospital in the directory is labeled with a tier (e.g., Flexible Indigo, Flexible Ámbar or Flexible Cuarzo) and a hospital level (A, B, C or D by specialty and infrastructure). That level drives your share of the cost: in variable-participation plans, deductible and coinsurance depend on the level of the hospital you use. For the equivalent Guadalajara metro breakdown, check our guide to GNP hospitals in Zapopan.
As a practical checklist, before signing your policy verify:
- That the hospital you'd go to is in your tier. Being "a GNP hospital" isn't enough — it must be in the hospital access you bought.
- The level (A/B/C) that hospital is classified under, since that drives your coinsurance.
- Whether your plan is Essential or Full. If you live in the bay and want to choose between Vallarta and Nayarit, Full access gives you more freedom.
- Cross-state coverage. Confirm with your advisor that your policy covers you in both Jalisco and Nayarit, since the bay crosses the state line.
- That the directory is current. Check it again at every renewal.
Bottom line
Puerto Vallarta and Bahía de Banderas today have enough private hospital network to live worry-free — but only if your insurance is designed for the reality of this bay split between two states. Choosing the right hospital access and verifying that "your" hospital is in your tier is the difference between using your policy without friction and finding out, at the worst possible moment, that it doesn't apply.
